Ready to work...for government that works
It's time for a Texas government that will produce a
better future for all Texans. At a time of rising taxes, reduced government services, and
legislation that is often a tool for personal ambition or personal vendettas, we need a
new Texas legislature one that will listen to and work for the needs of
hard-working Texas families. The 16-year incumbent in district 97 has been part of the
problem. A new representative in Austin is the solution.

Why Its Time for Change
In 2002 Texas Republicans claimed every top office in state
government and control of both houses of the Texas legislature. They have not used their
power well.
In one legislative session they
- "balanced" the state budget, which had a $9.9 billion
budget deficit, by cutting services, raising fees, and forcing counties and cities to
raise taxes to make up for state shortfalls in health services, schools, and
infrastructure
- held four special sessions that cost taxpayers millions but did
nothing to address the real problems of Texas
- redistricted the entire state again dividing cities and
communities to guarantee that in 22 of 31 Congressional districts, only Republicans will
win
- weakened consumer protections with additional insurance deregulation,
then called it "reform"
- removed caps on college tuition increases, leading to huge tuition
and fee increases at Texas college and universities
- gave the governor a $300 million slush fund for corporate giveaways
and entertaining businesses who might move to the state
The incumbent Republican representative from district 97 supported
every one of these costly measures. Can we afford another legislature that wastes your
dollars to help their friends? helps their corporate friends take more of your money?
allows college tuitions to rise without limits? tries to take money from underfunded
public schools for private school vouchers, leaving millions of children behind?
If youre tired of government as usual, by the powerful for the
powerful, its time for a new face in Austin. Nancy Stevens is a teacher, parent and
community volunteer who will represent Texas hardworking families in Austin.
