The Honorable Jim Wright
Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives

The future of our state and our nation depends on well-educated citizens, and Nancy Stevens, from her depth of experience with the public school system, understands and is committed to the achievement of a bright and happy future for Texas and America.”

TEXAS HOUSE | DISTRICT 97 Nancy Stevens
Anna Mowery, R-Fort Worth, has labored 16 years as the state representative from District 97.

It’s time, however, for fresh and energetic new leadership for the district, which includes much of west and southwest Fort Worth, Benbrook and other portions of southwest Tarrant County.

With education and school financing issues at the top of the state’s agenda, longtime southwest Fort Worth resident Nancy Stevens would provide both enthusiasm and expertise as the district’s voice in Austin.

Stevens, the Democratic nominee for the seat, has worked as a high school English teacher as well as for American Airlines and Texas Christian University. A parent and grandparent, she has been a longtime community volunteer as a Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher and member of school-related groups.

She favors a strong state investment in education. She is troubled by funding cutbacks that have resulted in larger class sizes, reduced planning periods for teachers and weakened arts programs.

She wants health insurance coverage extended to more uninsured Texans rather than belatedly treating them with costly emergency room care. She strongly supports the Children’s Health Insurance Program and efforts to lower health insurance costs for small businesses by putting them into larger risk pools.

She favors the creation of a well-integrated regional transit system to reduce gridlock. Feeling that “we’ve got to do something about cleaning up our air,” she is opposed to continued delays in implementation and enforcement of measures to curb pollution.

Mowery should be saluted for her years of service. But she has been only a marginally effective representative in recent years and in some instances has supported legislation that would hamper the effective operation of local governments.

The Star-Telegram recommends Nancy Stevens for Texas House District 97.
